Nano in Life
The Wang Lab develops a hands-on learning “Nano in Life” module, which shows nanoparticles (NPs) used in sensing and medicine. The module exhibits examples of NPs from everyday life that can be made from common carbon sources such as sugar and milk. This module cultivates knowledge in basic chemistry and chemical reactions, and the absorption and emission of light determined by nanoscale sizes.

The Robinson Community Learning Center operates a youth program out of the ND Center for Civic Innovation (NDCCI). This Youth Program primarily serves low-income, minority youth from grades 1-8 in South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC). According to the Indiana Department of Education, 71.6% of SBCSC students are from underrepresented minority groups and 18.4% are considered students with disabilities. The Youth Program’s afternoon offerings include a Design Thinking Club with ~15 underrepresented K-8 student participants each semester. Additionally, a summer “Design Thinking” camp attracts another ~15 middle school participants. The majority of the participants are non-native speakers.
